Operation Zero Tolerance--July 4th Mobilization
DON’T LET THIS JULY 4TH BLOW UP IN YOUR FACE!
July 4th Second Deadliest Travel Day of the Year
Georgia summer travelers beware! July 4th is the second most deadly holiday driving period of the year, with only News Year’s posing a greater threat to life behind the wheel or in the passenger seat! This nationwide call for caution is fueled by one of the most frequently committed crimes in the U-S: Across the country impaired drivers kill one person every thirty minutes. During the 2004 July 4th driving period, 253 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes. Eighteen victims were killed and 787 more were injured in Georgia alone during the summer Independence Day holiday last year.
“Nationally, nearly half of all traffic fatalities over the July 4th holiday are alcohol-related,” said Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) Director Bob Dallas. “That’s why we’re working overtime with highway safety advocates and our law enforcement partners to target the travel periods when impaired driving and July 4th holiday traffic volumes are historically the highest on our roadways.”
Operation Zero Tolerance enforcement officers will blanket Georgia’s roadways with high visibility sobriety checkpoints and concentrated OZT-patrols. “The OZT message is simple,“ said GOHS Director Dallas. “You drive impaired in Georgia, you WILL go to jail. Informed drivers get the handshakes, impaired drivers get the handcuffs. That’s Zero-Tolerance.”
More than 500 law enforcement agencies will mobilize officers throughout the state for OZT-duty from Friday, June 23 through Sunday, July 9, 2006. A statewide OZT ad campaign will accompany enforcement efforts to help raise public awareness that You Drink, You Drive. You Lose. “Too many people still don’t understand that alcohol and drugs and driving just don’t mix,” said GOHS Director Dallas. “Impaired driving is no accident, that’s why we call them CRASHES, NOT ACCIDENTS. We enforce OZT because impaired drivers cause a third of Georgia’s total traffic fatalities every year.”
July 4th OZT is part of the GOHS One Hundred Days of Summer Heat mobilization that runs through the end of the Labor Day holiday travel period cracking down on the deadly consequences of speeders, drunk and aggressive drivers, and safety belt violators. Director Dallas reminds responsible drivers to take precautions to protect their passengers on the road this summer. “If you see a drunk driver, call 911 or *GSP. The best protection against an encounter with a drunk driver is still a buckled safety belt and having all the kids buckled-up in their boosters and car seats. If you plan to drink, don’t drive. Don’t let the Fourth of July blow up in your face. If you plan to party, choose a designated driver before the celebrations begin!”
