Alcohol

Note: Surveillance of alcohol involvement in motor vehicle crashes is notoriously poor, not only in Georgia but across the country. For this reason, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates alcohol involvement in fatal crashes using statistical methods and known data from police crash reports; this estimation is not done for non-fatal injury and non-injury crashes. Therefore, the statistics below only reflect estimated alcohol involvement for Georgia’s highway fatalities.

In 2006, there were 604 highway fatalities associated with alcohol in Georgia, up from 571 fatalities in 2000. This equates to roughly one-third of Georgia’s overall fatalities.
