Operation
Lifesaver Night at the Braves: May 6, 2005
Representatives of
several affiliate members of Georgia Operation Lifesaver joined Bobby
Cox, Braves Manager, on the field for a pre-game ceremony commemorating
the 16th Annual "Operation Lifesaver Night at the Braves" on
Friday, May 6th. Bobby Cox will tape a new Public Service Announcement
(PSA) for Operation Lifesaver that will be shown at Turner Field during
Braves games to remind fans to drive safely and pay special attention
at railroad crossings.
Earlier that day, Governor Sonny Perdue had proclaimed the Month of May
as "Operation Lifesaver Month in Georgia" to focus attention
on the inherent dangers at Georgia's 10,000 Highway-Rail Grade Crossings,
if motorists fail to obey the law and yield to trains. Governor Perdue
commended the Operation Lifesaver members for their commitment to saving
lives and preventing injuries through their 31 years of existence. Since
Operation Lifesaver began in Georgia in 1974, crossing collisions have
been reduced by more than 70%. However, with the increase in both motor
vehicle and train traffic in Georgia, motorists and pedestrians alike
must continue to be educated about safety around trains, and the urgency
of never trying to beat a train at a crossing. Operation Lifesaver's message
to always "Look, Listen and Live" at railroad crossings is lifesaving...and
a message not to be ignored.
