Bike Week 2021: Capital To Coast
The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is extremely excited to debut a brand new public awareness campaign for National Bicycle Safety Month 2021. As you may or may not know, May is National Bicycle Safety Month. To kick off this effort at home here in Georgia, GOHS will be debuting “Capital to Coast 2021” May 3-7, 2021. The inaugural launch of this campaign will include a 5-city educational tour, with stops in Atlanta (May 3), Athens (May 4), Macon (May 5), Savannah (May 6), and Brunswick (May 7).
You may ask yourself why a whole week dedicated to bicycle safety? Well, the truth is cyclist fatalities are still a problem both nationwide and in Georgia. In 2019, 846 cyclists were killed in traffic crashes across America and 20 of those deaths occurred in Georgia. In fact, preliminary data from the Georgia Department of Transportation shows Georgia’s cyclist fatalities increased to 28 in 2020. To help decrease these numbers, the Capital to Coast 2021 tour will focus on issues like helmet safety, the “3 Feet Law,” tips for both motorists and cyclists on sharing the road and other bicycle safety issues.
The specific locations and events for Capital to Coast can be found HERE. Routes for each day's group ride are linked in the PDF.
