GOVERNOR’S CHALLENGE AWARDS
Every year, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety presents the Governor’s Challenge Awards to recognize the outstanding performance of Georgia’s traffic enforcement officers. More than 700 officers, advocates, and elected officials will come from around the state to show their support for this year’s nominees at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park.
Keynote Speaker From The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
“We’re proud to have NHTSA Deputy Administrator Jim Ports as our 2007 keynote speaker,” said GOHS Director Bob Dallas. “To honor this participation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, GOHS will make the official announcement of Georgia’s overall safetybelt usage rate for 2007. Georgia’s safetybelt usage rate hit 90% in 2006, that’s the highest in the Southeast.”
NOMINEES FROM YOUR COMMUNITY
Governor's Challenge is a special event designed to document dedication behind-the-badge for Georgia’s life-saving highway safety enforcement programs. This program recognizes the best of Georgia’s law enforcement professionals for their efforts to increase safety belt use, slow down speeders, and reduce impaired and aggressive driving. A total of 41hometown Georgia law enforcement agencies will be awarded for their achievements at the state level.
EIGHTEEN NATIONAL WINNERS FROM GEORGIA
Last year, six winning agencies from Georgia’s Governor’s Challenge went on to receive national recognition from the International Association of Chief’s of Police (IACP). This year, eight National Winners from Georgia are already First Place Winners in their national categories, including Adel PD, Morrow PD, and sheriff offices in Taylor, Elbert, White, Forsyth, Hall, and Richmond Counties.
In all, Georgia will recognize eighteen IACP National Winners, to include the Georgia State Patrol and police departments from Cornelia, Port Wentworth, Valdosta, and Cobb County, and sheriff’s office’s in Twiggs, Franklin, Decatur, Tift, and Coweta Counties. Georgia’s national winners will be recognized again in October at the IACP National Conference in New Orleans.
LAW ENFORCEMENT EXCELLENCE
The Governor’s Challenge is a statewide incentive program to award outstanding achievements in traffic safety enforcement and education. Georgia law enforcement agencies are judged on both the approach and effectiveness of their overall highway safety programs. The law enforcement agency with the highest overall evaluation will be presented with the GOHS “Governor’s Cup.”
“Participation in mobilizations like Click It Or Ticket, Operation Zero Tolerance, and the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. has proven that high-visibility enforcement of Georgia’s traffic laws is the key to saving lives and reducing injuries on Georgia’s highways. The added benefit to our communities is the interdiction of the criminal element through regular traffic enforcement,” said Director Dallas.
