PEDS to Debut Hard-Hitting Anti-Speeding Ad mattmontgomery  at:  1/2/2008

PEDS to Debut Hard-Hitting
Anti-Speeding Ad

WHAT: PEDS launches an unsettling anti-neighborhood speeding ad on nearly 200 movie theater screens in metro Atlanta. Though the spot is limited to PG-13 and R-rated screens, it may disturb some viewers.

Metro Atlanta residents consider neighborhood speeding a serious issue. Over 100 metro Atlanta neighborhoods have used 3,000 PEDS’ Slow Down yard signs to discourage speeding. Yet, too many drivers still think it’s okay to drive 5 or 10 mph over the neighborhood limit, unaware that they won’t be able to stop in time to avoid a tragedy. PEDS’ ad, funded by Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, might change their minds.

WHERE: Atlanta-Fulton County Central Library Auditorium

One Margaret Mitchell Square
Atlanta, GA 30303

WHEN: July 27, 2007, 11:00AM – 11:30AM

VIDEO/PHOTO OPPPORTUNITIES:

Watch the hard-hitting ad and receive a DVD copy for your broadcast or website.

Receive a CD of screenshots from the ad for print publication.

Capture people’s reactions to the ad.

Hear from Bob Dallas, Director of Georgia’s Governor’s Office of Highways Safety, local police officers and residents fed up with neighborhood speeding.

QUICK FACTS:

Metro Atlanta drivers hit 4 pedestrians every day.
Pedestrians account for 1 of every 6 traffic fatalities in metro Atlanta.
In an average year, 1,000 pedestrians are injured by drivers in metro Atlanta and another 80 pedestrians are killed. (ARC’s Traffic Crash Profiles 9/06)
Hit at 20 mph, 95% of pedestrian survive. Hit at 30mph, about half are killed.

Traffic Safety Annual Assessment--A Preview mattmontgomery  at:  1/2/2008

A preview of results from the 2006 Annual Assessment of Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Fatalities and Injuries shows that the number of people killed in the in motor vehicle traffic crashes declined from 43,510 in 2005 to 42,642, the lowest level in five years. This decline is the largest in terms of both number and percentage since 1992. The preview data shows the decline in fatalities occurred for passenger car occupants, light-truck occupants, and nonmotorists (pedestrian and pedalcyclists).  The drop in passenger car occupant fatalities was for the fourth year in a row, while the drop in light-truck occupant fatalities was the first since 1992. However, motorcycle rider fatalities continued their nine-year increase, reaching 4,810 in 2006.  Motorcycle rider fatalities now account for 11 percent of total fatalities, exceeding the number of pedestrian fatalities for the first time since NHTSA began collecting fatal motor vehicle crash data in 1975.

The preview also shows that the estimate of the number of people injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes declined for the seventh year in a row.  In 2006 just under 2.6 million people were injured compared to nearly 2.7 million in 2005.  The preview data shows that the number of people injured declined in all categories except motorcycle riders and that the decline was highest for large-truck occupants and passenger car occupants.

Please be aware of the following new driving laws that the police will be ticketing drivers for. Most will not issue warnings for these offenses.

1. Misuse of the carpool....

The e-mail is false and is being adapted for various states as it is passed along, most recently listing Georgia.

Please be aware that this is false information and no such changes have occurred in Georgia.  Information on this e-mail is listed at the following internet site:

July 4th Holiday Fatality Predictions mattmontgomery  at:  1/2/2008

JULY 4 HOLIDAY FATALITY PREDICTIONS:

(ATLANTA) The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and the Crash Reporting Unit of the Georgia Department of Transportation have released their predictions for traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities for the July 4th holiday period. Crash analysis experts at GSP and DOT are predicting 1,015 traffic crashes, 397 injuries and 6 fatalities during this 30-hour holiday travel period.

This year, the July Fourth holiday period begins at 6PM Tuesday, July 3rd and ends at midnight, Wednesday, July 4th. The last time there was a 30-hour holiday travel period on the 4th of July was in 2001. That year, recorded 1,183 traffic crashes, 321injuries and 4 traffic deaths.

In 2006, during a 78-hour July 4th holiday period, there were 2,922 crashes resulting in 1,289 injuries and 30 fatalities.

The fatal crash statistics emphasize the reason why State Troopers and officers with the DPS Motor Carrier Compliance Division and Capitol Police will be patrolling both days of the Independence Day holiday. More than 500 local law enforcement agencies will partner with the Georgia State Patrol to save lives on our highways.

Enforcement of “Operation Zero Tolerance” is already underway. The OZT statewide impaired driving crackdown is coordinated each year by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). GOHS Director Bob Dallas said motorists should expect to encounter random sobriety road checks and concentrated patrols all across . Officers will also be ticketing drivers who violate the posted speed limits as part of the “100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T.” enforcement campaign.  Here’s why:

·         Last year one-third of ’s highway deaths were speed-related crashes.

·         One-out-of-five crash fatalities were alcohol-related.

·         More than 50-percent of ’s crash fatalities weren’t wearing safetybelts.

Georgia’s combined high visibility enforcement campaigns have proven effective for raising driver safety awareness. Stay sober, stay alive, and stay out of these statistics this holiday. Remember, “Over The Limit. Under Arrest.” Drunk drivers go to jail. It’s about raising survival rates, not ticket revenues.  So when you plan to party this holiday, plan first for a designated driver.  Don’t let July 4th blow up in your face.

GOHS and Gas Station TV mattmontgomery  at:  1/2/2008

GOHS PUMPS-UP STATEWIDE

DRIVE SOBER CAMPAIGN ON ‘GAS STATION TV’

(ATLANTA) This Fourth of July holiday, the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is literally taking its anti-DUI campaign on the road with Gas Station TV (GSTV), the leader in digital gas station media. Georgia’s Operation Zero Tolerance impaired driving message known as “OZT” is making high profile pit stops at gas stations located in Wal-Mart parking lots in Atlanta and other cities around the state. ’s drunk driving PSA’s will be playing on twenty-inch high definition television screens installed atop each pump at a filling station near you.  For the first time, it’s “OZT” on GSTV!

GSTV is the only digital television network entertaining motorists across the nation with ABC and ESPN programming along with weather and traffic updates while they fuel up their vehicles. GSTV proved to be the perfect medium to reach motorists during the high-traffic holiday, as drivers find the television network engaging according to a Nielsen Media Research study that revealed 77 percent of respondents looked at or listened to GSTV while refueling at stations with the service, and 89 percent intend to watch or listen to it on their next visit.

Now, during the July Fourth holiday travel week, motorists will also see a timely public service ad from GOHS reminding them to drive sober and about the consequences if they don’t:  “Over The Limit. Under Arrest.”

“It’s a no-brainer,” said Jim Shuler, Public Affairs Director for ’s Highway Safety Office. “We’re running our July Fourth impaired driving campaign ads where we know we’re guaranteed to reach our target audience, so our lifesaving message will be there waiting for them.  Sooner or later, every driver has to go to the gas station,” said Shuler.  “And we’ll know each hand that picks up a gas nozzle will be part of our target demographic for as long as it takes to fill the tank and hear about Operation Zero Tolerance.”

Georgia’s EMMY-Award winning impaired driving PSA campaign entitled “Coming This Summer” was developed by ImageMaster Productions of Atlanta.  “Our highway safety ads were shot at real road checks, using real police officers, doing real DUI enforcement,” said GOHS Public Affairs Director Shuler. “Shot on film for rich texture, with unique lighting, moving camera, and action edits, the “Coming This Summer” campaign was designed with the look and sound of blockbuster movie promos,“ he said.  When ’s July Fourth enforcement initiative is over, a GSTV report will tell GOHS exactly how many drivers saw the OZT message over the holiday.

Georgia enforces Operation Zero Tolerance because one out of every five traffic fatalities here each year is alcohol-related,” said Shuler. “OZT targets travel periods when impaired driving and summer holiday traffic volumes are historically the highest on our state roadways.” GOHS will also educate drivers about ’s impaired driving enforcement mobilizations using traditional radio, TV, and cable television ads and with help from local news media reports. Research proves that high visibility enforcement of OZT, coupled with focused media attention, results in reduced impaired driving crashes and fatalities.

The summer holiday OZT campaign is part of the GOHS 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. initiative that also runs through the end of the Labor Day travel period in September.  For more information about Operation Zero Tolerance and the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. campaign, visit the GOHS website at www.gahighwaysafety.org.
