SCN Poster Unveiling mattmontgomery  at:  4/5/2007
Join Safe Campuses Now  on Thursday, March 29 at 2 p.m., as we proudly unveiling 13 new posters designed to increase awareness of various safety issues including impaired driving, alcohol poisoning, rape and pedestrian safety issues. The event will be held at The Ritz Bar, located at 346 E. Broad Street. Event speakers include Governor's Office of Highway Safety Director Robert Dallas, UGA Chief of Police Jimmy Williamson, State Judge Kent Lawrence, current Department of Corrections inmate Chris Sandy and DUI Prevention advocates Joyce and Eric Krug.

Safe Campuses Now understands that reaching teen and young adult with safety messages is challenging. Approaching social marketing in a non-typical way, based on direct input from high school and college students, SCN created the Blitz Poster Campaign. The materials, born through a collaborative effort of marketing professionals, highway safety stakeholders, students, the hospitality industry and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, have become a means to reach the target audience of high school and college students with lifesaving messages.

We also thank all our corporate partners: Apartment Finder, Fairway Outdoor Advertising, Fred's Historic Properties, The Georgian Press, Leon Farmer & Company, Locos Grill & Pub and SnowdenTatarski.

Thank you so much for your continued support of this and other SCN educational efforts!

South Cobb High School Wins Governor Prom Party mattmontgomery  at:  4/5/2007
Governor Perdue Announces Winner of Prom Party PSA Contest

Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that South Cobb High School in Austell is the winner of the Prom Party Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest.  The school's reward is a prom party at the Governor's Mansion on Friday, May 11, 2007.

Governor Perdue and First Lady Mary Perdue are opening the doors of the Governor's Mansion for the second straight year to host a prom party in an effort to promote safe driving and responsible behavior for teenagers on prom night and every night of the year.  This year Governor Perdue initiated a PSA contest for all high schools competing to win the prom party at the Governor's Mansion.

"Mary and I are excited to provide these young adults with an experience that is fun, safe and enjoyable, " said Governor Sonny Perdue.  "Choosing this year's winner was difficult.  We had so many wonderful entries, and I want to thank each of the schools for submitting their videos."

A total of 70 schools from across the state submitted PSAs for the competition.  The number was narrowed to 16 finalists from which the winning school was chosen.  The 16 finalists included:

Benjamin Banneker High School, College Park
Chattahoochee High School, Alpharetta
Dalton High School, Dalton
John S. Davidson Fine Arts School, Augusta
Decatur High School, Decatur
Gainesville High School, Gainesville
Marietta High School, Marietta
Northgate High School, Newnan
Northview High School, Duluth
Osborne High School, Marietta
Parkview High School, Gwinnett
Peachtree Ridge High School, Suwanee
South Cobb High School, Austell
Thomas County Central High, Thomasville
Walton High School, Marietta

The PSA videos of the 16 finalists were reviewed by a panel of judges from the Governor's Office, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Georgia Sheriffs' Association, Georgia Public Broadcasting, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Each participating school was asked to submit a 30-second public service announcement addressing the dangers and consequences of impaired driving among teenagers.  Videos were judged on content, creativity and overalll effectiveness of the message.  Georgia Public Broadcasting has agreed to work with the winning school to reproduce the winning PSA for broadcast on television.

This is the second consecutive year that Governor Perdue and First Lady Mary Perdue have hosted a prom party at the Governor's Mansion.  The Governor's prom party endorses safe and responsible decision making surrounding prom activities in Georgia.

Look for it in Albany on WALB-TV NBC at 7:30PM..

..In Atlanta on WSB-TV ABC at 8:30PM..

..And in Augusta on WJBF-TV ABC at 8:00PM.

“Driving Ambition” will be rebroadcast in Macon on WMAZ-TV NBC on Tuesday, March 27, at 10:30PM and in Columbus on WRBL-TV CBS on Saturday, April 7 at 7:30PM.

This video has been in much demand as a teaching tool and is about to be available in   again.  Organizations working with children, youth, or families in in an organized format may be eligible to obtain DVD copies of “Driving Ambition” at no charge by contacting the State of ’s Children and Youth Coordinating Council at their website to order their free educational products from the CYCC’s online store.  Visit them at www.cycc.state.ga.us .  For more information about obtaining copies, contact Nikki Tucker at CYCC at nikkitucker@cycc.state.ga.us or call 404-508-6574.

A limited amount of DVD copies of the video will also be available at the GOHS website online store at a later date.  Read more about the “Driving Ambition” video:

From the “Driving Ambition” video jacket cover:  “Motor vehicle crashes are still the leading of death among teenagers.  Each year, more than 5,000 teenagers die in traffic crashes in the .  In , more than 200 teens die in traffic crashes each year, leaving devastated families with grief that never goes away.  The cost to society is staggering.  The emotional cost is impossible to measure.

In July 1997, the Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act became law in .  Since the, traffic fatalities among teenagers have consistently declined, but fatal crashes continue to occur, and driving laws have been strengthened to address this tragic situation.

Mandatory jail sentences for DUI are sending first-time offenders to jail for at least 24 hours.  A graduated licensing system is making teenagers prove they are responsible enough to drive, and 16-year-olds must pass a certified driver training course prior to receiving a driver’s license.

Driving Ambition explains the new driving laws and looks at the results DUI, inexperienced, and reckless driving have on society.  Listen carefully to the message of families and individuals whose lives have been shattered by motor vehicle crashes.  Make a commitment to be a safe and responsible driver and answer this critical question, ‘Will my driving cost lives of save lives?’”

We hope you will support this teen driver safety project by watching the premier of “Driving Ambition” where you live or by ordering a copy for your agency or civic group.  Thanks for supporting this lifesaving GOHS highway safety education project.
