BE SURE TO WATCH FOX5 ATLANTA TV NEWS TONIGHT, FEBRUARY 28.. for a story about GOHS motorcycle safety and enforcement programs. Watch for the motorcycle story at 6PM.. probably around 6:15pm.. And watch for it again.. probably around 10:15 on the Fox5 late news this Wednesday night, February 28.
The story was shot in White County last week as a follow-up to a two-part series the Fox5 I-Team did last November about the growing problems with motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities in the North Georgia Mountains due to excessive speed, impaired driving, and inexperienced new bikers.
I-Team reporter Dale Russell took some rare time away from investigative stories to spend a day with HEAT Teams from Forsyth, Hall, Walton and White County Sheriff’s Offices and Troopers from the GSP Gainesville Post to illustrate this law enforcement story. GOHS HEAT Planner Scarlett Woods was there to organize logistics for the HEAT Team meeting and the road check.
GOHS Motorcycle Program Planner Fred Huff conducted the motorcycle safety program meeting before the road check to speak on camera and familiarize the officers and FOX5 with the training that’s available to save lives of motorcycle riders across .
White County Sheriff Neal Weldon was host to the HEAT meeting and the road check and spoke on camera stating intentions to use his GOHS HEAT grant to save lives through high profile enforcement efforts. Even though the Cleveland area road check was conducted in the middle of the week during daylight hours, the nice weather brought out some motorcycles to the mountain roads and law enforcement made several contacts with bikers who did not have proper licenses. The HEAT Teams also locked up a DUI and “wrote a bunch of tickets“ during this ninety minute road check that ran from 3pm to 430pm.
Reporter Dale Russell told us he was impressed with the law enforcement turn-out and with the HEAT grant concept for saving lives. If you missed this series when it first aired in November, be sure to check out this Wednesday night follow-up that highlights the solutions GOHS and its partners are bringing into work on the problem. You can view the original two-part series on the Fox5 I-Team website at myfoxatlanta.com
Thanks to Mr. Russell for this positive coverage, thanks to Director Bob Dallas for supporting the concept and thanks to everyone who had a role in making this informative story a success. We want to get the word out to as many motorcycle enthusiasts as possible that there is training available to help them survive the risks involved and enjoy a great sport.
