Impaired driving is one of America’s deadliest problems.. And the holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is one of the most dangerous times on the calendar, due to an increase in drunk driving. Impaired drivers cause almost a third of Georgia’s traffic fatalities each year. That could mean 500 alcohol-related funerals for Georgia families by year’s end.

“The numbers are tragic. The message is simple.. If You Drink and Drive, You Lose,” says Director Bob Dallas of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “That’s why Georgia law enforcement officers from OPERATION ZERO-TOLERANCE (OZT) will be out-in-force this December Holiday travel period, and if you’re drinking and driving, they’ll be looking for you.”

2005 GOHS Educational Awards Luncheon

Counselors, community activists, educators, volunteers and elected officials from around the state gathered recently to hear the host of the Annual GOHS Educational Awards Banquet deliver accolades to highway safety advocates at the Merle Manders Conference Center in Stockbridge. Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Director Bob Dallas told the crowd of highway safety professionals that GOHS could not accomplish its life saving mission without their commitment to public safety.

This is the second year the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has presented this prestigious awards event to recognize the outstanding performance of GOHS Grantees dedicated to the task of saving lives on ’s roads and highways.  “You’re being honored for the job you do every day, making our communities safer places to live by providing safer places to cycle, run, walk, bicycle, and drive,” said Director Dallas.

The GOHS Educational Awards are designed to recognize exceptional grantee achievements in highway safety planning, advocacy, enforcement and education.

GOHS Grantees are judged on both the approach and effectiveness of their overall highway safety programs.

“Nominations were made for notable efforts that moved GOHS closer to our lifesaving goals in 2005,” said GOHS Planning and Program Director Spencer Moore.   “Our mission statement is to educate the public on traffic safety and facilitate the implementation of programs that reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on roadways.  Those are the essentials we looked for when we opened up these awards to nominations.”

The judging was done by highway safety professionals in Tennessee.  This year twenty-one ’s highway safety grantees were recognized with special awards for their excellence at the 2005 GOHS Educational Awards Banquet. The categories covered Legislative-Leadership, Adjudication, Law Enforcement, Citizen Activism, Media-Awareness, Corporate Leadership, Governmental Leadership, Education and Prevention and Youth Initiative.
