HANDS ACROSS THE BORDER 2004
For six days leading up to the Labor Day holiday weekend, the Georgia State Patrol and local police and sheriff’s deputies participated in the 13th Annual Hands Across the Border highway safety awareness campaign. From Sunday, August 29 through Friday, September 3rd, 2004, Georgia law enforcement joined their partners from bordering states Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee in a major southeastern Zero Tolerance impaired driving enforcement effort.
Motorists who stopped at road checks and Visitors Centers in Georgia and bordering states received seatbelt, child safety seat and impaired driving brochures. This year, Hands Across the Border was part of the “One Hundred Days of Summer HEAT” campaign sponsored by the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety to raise awareness about the deadly consequences of speed, drunk and drugged driving, and failure to use safety belts and child restraints.

FACTS FROM THE HIGHWAY SAFETY CARAVAN TO EFFINGHAM COUNTY
The Safety Caravan is conducted annually by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) in communities which have specific traffic safety issues. Seat belt use, speeding, DUI and teenage driving were among the reasons Effingham County was chosen for the event. Recent teen crashes and fatalities related to speeding and not using seatbelts prompted county and city law enforcement officials to band together and increase public awareness.
The Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute (GTIPI), a part of the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service, assists GOHS with the educational component of the Caravan each year. Special thanks goes out to Steve Davis from GTIPI and Alex Cabral from GOHS who helped make the Caravan a huge success.
