Give Thanks By Buckling Up This Holiday and Every Day

Georgia Kicks Off Annual Thanksgiving Safety Belt Enforcement Campaign

(ATLANTA) While they may not want to tighten anything after eating a turkey feast this Thanksgiving, there is one thing Georgia motorists will want to double check is snug and secure when they hit the road this holiday season…their safety belt!

That’s why the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is kicking off its annual November seatbelt enforcement campaign for Click It Or Ticket. GOHS is reminding highway travelers this Thanksgiving that the only belt that should be left unbuckled this year, or any year, is the one holding up your trousers…not the seatbelts in your car.

“Seatbelts have saved more lives than any other single piece of automotive safety equipment,” said GOHS Director Harris Blackwood. “But in order for them to work, they have to be used and they have to be used correctly.  This Thanksgiving, and every day and night of the year, be sure to buckle your seatbelt and you’ll have the opportunity to unbuckle that other belt at the feast table with your family and friends.”

During the Thanksgiving holiday period in 2009 (which ran from 6PM Wednesday, Nov. 25 to 5:59AM on Monday, Nov. 30), 303 people died in traffic crashes nationwide, including 115 during daylight hours and 187 during the night time. An additional crash occurred at an unknown time.

And according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), night time is one of the more dangerous times on the road because seatbelt use is traditionally lower.  Of the 187 passenger vehicle occupant deaths at night during the 2009 Thanksgiving holiday period, more than half (54 percent) did not have their seatbelts fastened, while 49 percent in daytime crashes were not wearing seat belts.

“Thanksgiving is the holiday most closely associated with family and travel,” said Director Blackwood. “But if you hit the highways unbelted, the faces you could be seeing this holiday might belong to an emergency room doctor or nurse instead of the faces of your loved ones.”

NHTSA research shows regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.  Research has shown that when lap and shoulder belts are used properly, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.

So on Turkey Day and every day, remember to Click It or Ticket and Buckle Up Every Trip, Every Time. For more information about traveling safely during Thanksgiving, please visit www.gahighwaysafety.org.

FROM THE may 2011 click it or ticket campaign.....

A safety belt won’t save even one life if it’s not used.
NIGHT & DAY...BUCKLE-UP GEORGIA!

(STATEWIDE GEORGIA)  It’s CLICK IT OR TICKET time in Georgia!  And if you’re one of those death-defying motorists who won’t wear a safety belt, Georgia traffic enforcement officers are again launching their statewide strategy to save you from yourself.  All across Georgia, hundreds of police agencies will run roadchecks day and night beginning May 23rd and running through the Memorial Day travel period to track down drivers and passengers who don’t bother to buckle-up when the sun goes down.

NIGHT OR DAY, IF YOU DON’T CLICK IT, EXPECT A TICKET

When safety experts studied nationwide fatality stats hoping to save more lives, they made this deadly discovery: Nighttime passenger vehicle occupants are among those least likely to buckle up and most likely to die in crashes when unrestrained. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has found that of those who died in nighttime crashes in 2009, nearly two-thirds (62 percent) were NOT wearing seatbeltsat the time of their fatal crash.

UNBUCKLED DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS TARGETED IN GEORGIA

The alarming facts are that in 2009, 11,593 people died in traffic crashes across the country between the hours of 6PM and 5:59AM. According to NHTSA, we know that 452 Georgians died in traffic crashes in 2009 because they did not click-it. What’s more is there were another 111 Georgia crash fatalities where restraint use was unconfirmed! And those people are the reason we ticket…because they didn’t click-it. What are yourodds? Statewide, almost 1,300 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2009.

CRACKDOWN COMING

“Our law enforcement community witnesses horrific car crashes every day and so many of the deaths and injuries that result from those crashes could’ve been prevented by a properly buckled safety belt,” said Director Harris Blackwood of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). “And that’s what all of our officers, troopers and deputies will be thinking of during this May enforcement campaign of Click It or Ticket. And lest you think Click It or Ticket is just an unnecessary crackdown, remember that this mobilization has helped raise the national observed safety belt usage rate to an all time high of 85 percent in 2010.”

IT’S ABOUT RAISING SURVIVAL RATES, NOT REVENUE!

In 2009 alone, seatbelts saved an estimated 12,713 lives…and more than 72,000 lives from 2005 to 2009. In fact, more than a quarter million lives have been saved since 1975. But sadly, 23,283 occupants of cars, trucks, SUV’s and vans were killed in traffic crashes in 2009 and 53 percent of fatally injured passenger vehicles occupants were NOT wearing seatbelts at the time of their fatal crash.

AMAZING SEATBELTS MAKE MANY CAR CRASHES SURVIVABLE

But the good news is that NHTSA research shows when worn correctly, seatbelts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent for front-seat passenger car occupants and by 60 percent for pickup truck, SUV and van occupants. In fact, only one percent of crash victims who are buckled up are totally ejected from their vehicles, compared with 31 percent of those who are unbuckled.

BUCKLE –UP! EVERY TRIP, EVERY SEAT, EVERY TIME!

State law authorizes enforcement officers to write tickets by simply observing unbelted drivers or passengers. So State Troopers, GSP NightHawk Patrols, and H.E.A.T. Units will roll-out high visibility enforcement measures during the Memorial Day holidays. "Wearing your seatbelt costs you nothing, but not wearing it could cost you everything,” said GOHS Director Harris.  "You shouldn’t risk a ticket because you’ll also end up risking your life. So remember to buckle up day and night.”
