CHILD SAFETY SEAT CHECK-UP EVENT: OCTOBER 26, 2005

On Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 1:30pm, Atlanta Fire-Rescue Department, in conjunction with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), kicked off the Fall/Winter Child Safety Seat Campaign at the Watkins’ and Sons Funeral Home parking lot in the West End section of Atlanta. Interested persons had an opportunity to stop by and learn how to properly secure children in their car seats. Onsite experts answered questions and assisted individuals with special needs and concerns.

Over 600,000 children under the age of six reside in Georgia and it is estimated that less than half of the state's children are not properly restrained while being transported in motor vehicles, resulting in nearly 300,000 unrestrained children being at risk of death or injuries on Georgia's roadways.

At the event, GOHS and Atlanta Fire-Rescue were able to pull over 45 unusable and unsafe child safety seats from Georgia roadways. All together, over 100 child safety seats were checked and 88 child safety seats distributed to those in need of this service.

A big thank you goes out to all members of the Atlanta Fire-Rescue Department who participated and GOHS's Linda Bradford and Barbara Jones. Special thanks should also go to GOHS's Alex Cabral for his hard work with this event and child safety seat programs in general.
