The Georgia DOT along with GOHS participates in a statewide Work Zone Safety awareness and education campaign. This campaign is designed to educate highway construction and maintenance workers, contractors and the motoring public about the dangerous conditions in work zones. A key element of this campaign is to inform motorists that they are more likely to be killed or injured in work zone accidents than Georgia DOT employees or contract workers.

On April 4th, a ceremony was held at GDOT headquarters to memorialize fallen GDOT workers and display equipment utilized to make work zones safer.

Commissioner Smith was joined by other speakers, including Bill Farr, Assistant Administrator for the FHWA, Georgia District; Harris Blackwood, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety; and State Senator Steve Gooch, a former member of the State Transportation Board. Representatives of the highway construction industry, the American Transportation Safety Services Association, GDOT Engineers Association and public safety officers were also present..
