On February 16th and 17th, Panama City, Florida was host to the 2011 NHTSA Southeast Region Law Enforcement Leadership Meeting. Held yearly, the LEL meeting allows for law enforcement personnel involved in highway safety from around the South to meet and discuss current projects, analyze statistics trends in highway safety, learn about advances in highway safety engineering, media, and planning, as well as to organize group activities to unify and create region wide enforcement campaigns.
Among the highlights of this year's convention was a moving presentation on Visions of Courage from a retired Louisiana State Patrolman, a panel on nighttime belt enforcement, the how-to on implementing DDACTS, a Drug Recognition Expert review, Sunrise Sports Entertainment President Michael Yormark on Building a Winning Team, information on state and national Law Enforcement Challenges, and a study on how to sell traffic enforcement to rural agencies. The data, stories, and planning provided will help create new opportunities in highway safety in individual states and around the region as a whole. The regional NHTSA Team, led by Terry Schiavone, will be working to make sure that the enthusiasm generated by this conference will be maintained and expanded in the upcoming year.
