Georgia is “Taking It to The Street” – the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is taking the Share the Road motorcycle safety message to a highway near you.

The Georgia Motorcycle Awareness Tour (GMAT) will launch a 5-day media sweep across the state to spread the Share the Road message to motorists and raise awareness about motorcycle safety in areas facing high crash rates. GMAT will crisscross the state with several planned media stops from Peachtree City to Savannah. Each media stop will be hosted by local motorcycle chapters and law enforcement from each jurisdiction.

As the 2009 riding season begins, the GMAT tour promotes safe riding as a daily reminder for all motorists to stay alert and watch out for motorcycles. Motorcycles are an increasingly popular means of transportation. Motorcycle ownership here has climbed to 194,563 as of September 30, 2007 representing a 22-percent increase in registered motorcycles over 2006.

Motorcycle riders are less protected on our highways than drivers of trucks or passenger vehicles, so other drivers need to be especially aware of their presence. Today’s riders are your neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Let’s all work together to keep them safe on Georgia roads.

GOHS has several promotional stops planned on this tour and we encourage you to become part of this safety conscious pick-up ride. Feel free to join us at one of the planned media events, or if you have the proper license, come along for the ride. Come Share the Road!

Stay Up and Let’s Ride!
