NHTSA Law Enforcement Leadership Meeting--Tunica, Mississippi

On February 21st and 22nd, Tunica, Mississippi was host to the 2007 NHTSA Southeast Region Law Enforcement Leadership Meeting. Held yearly, the LEL meeting allows for law enforcement personnel involved in highway safety from around the South to meet and discuss current projects, analyze statistics trends in highway safety, learn about advances in highway safety engineering, media, and planning, as well as to organize group activities to unify and create region wide enforcement campaigns.

Special thanks to Mike Vick and the entire Mississippi Office of Highway Safety Team for graciously hosting this year's convention

Among the highlights of this year's convention was a moving presentation on how law enforcement came together in the face of Hurricane Katrina, a panel on Safety Belt Enforcement Techniques, the how-to on the IACP National Law Enforcement Challenge, local programs making national noise, why engaging local prosecutors in safety planning can lead to more effective traffic enforcement, and the 2007 Hands Across the Border plans. The data, stories, and planning provided will help create new opportunites in highway safety in individual states and around the region as a whole. The regional NHTSA Team, led by Terry Schiavone, Sandy Richardson, and Chris Broome will be working to make sure that the enthusiasm generated by this conference will be maintained and expanded in the upcoming year.
