2006 SPECIALTY LICENSE PLATES TO SUPPORT GOHS

In 2006, Georgians will now have the chance to show their spirit on their license plates while helping to educate the general public on important safety issues. Last year, the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation allowing the creation of a number of new specialty license plates. Included in the new plates suggested were 20 individual NASCAR racer plates and a Georgia Bikes! Share the Road plate. The individual plates will cost $25 with all of the money from the Georgia Bikes! plates and $14.75 of the NASCAR plates going to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) for use in motorist and cyclist safety, education, and awareness projects and programs.

To order the plates, go to your local "tag office" in your local county starting on January 3, 2006. You can then take identification and $25 to the counter staff and ask to apply for either the SHARE THE ROAD plates or one of the NASCAR plates. Once there are at least 1,000 applications for each of the plates, the State of Georgia will begin to manufacture the plates and will start distributing them to the county tag offices where the applications were submitted. You will then have the option of getting the plate on your normal tag renewal date or getting it early (paying the $25 specialty tag fee then and again on your renewal date). Fees will be a one-time $25 plate manufacturing fee and the annual $25 specialty license plate fee. You will still be responsible for your standard, annual $20 registration fee and for any ad valorem taxes.

(Please note that the $25 application fee will be refunded in the unlikely event that 1,000 are not received by the end of 2007)

So, regardless if your passions run toward two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles, take the time to get your specialty plate today!
